Oil Changes in Egg Harbor Township, NJ

Every car owner understands the need for oil changes as part of the vehicle's routine maintenance procedure, but not everyone understands why it is important or how exactly the procedure is performed. An oil change on the surface is just flushing out the old oil and pouring in new, but there is a little more to it.

Getting an Oil Change

To drain the fluid, the easiest way is to raise the car on a shop lift to gain easy access to the underside. A bolt is removed from the bottom of the oil pan, allowing the old oil to be properly collected and stored for recycling. The bolt is put back in place with a new plastic or rubber washer, serving as a gasket to prevent leaks. The car is then lowered back to the ground and the oil is topped off from the top of the engine.

Oil Change Services Overview

Why Oil Needs To Be Changed

One aspect of oil changes even many people overlook is the different types of available oils. There are different weights of conventional oils and different types of synthetic oils. Although in loose terms, any oil is used in any car, there are manufacturer recommendations based on specifics of each make and model, and what the designers intended to assure they get the longest possible lifetime of safe and efficient driving. Each of the different oil types has its properties which might make one better suited for a specific car than a different type.

What Happens if Oil isn't Changed

If oil changes are skipped or not conducted properly, any noticeable symptoms will rarely present themselves immediately. More likely is that over time the car will suffer in terms of gas mileage and handling efficiency, but the changes will come on so slowly you won't notice them as they happen. Eventually, it will get to the point in which the vehicle just doesn't run properly and it has to go to the shop for repairs. Even after the repairs have been made, the overall life of the car will be shortened, and it might not ever run again the way it was intended to drive with the original design. Oil changes need to be performed by a qualified professional such as our technicians at Chapman Ford of Egg Harbor Township in New Jersey.
